you were the kind of person that everybody knew
but never remembered.

not quite normal, but still forgettable (just like that story you told me).

the one found walking alone in the middle of a crowd,

who strayed from the illuminated path
   only to stumble in darkness.

(your eyes never adjusted).
they never learned your name, you had to remind them over and over again, until they stopped asking.

I like the structure and the way you have phrased it all to make the greatest of impacts... and to emphasise the concept and what you mean as well, in a way.

The end comes up fast, I have to say, and I can't help feeling as if the person never quite had enough time to adjust properly... and that they were just thrown into the dark pit in a remorseless kind of way.

Great use of the parenthesis there, especially as it gives further insight and makes it even more intimate, personal... which makes it all the more cruel as the person stumbles. =/

Reminds me a little bit of Merwin's translation of Emperor Hadrian's little poem. (It's entitled "Little Soul" I think, look for it and W.S. Merwin.)

Such a sad portrait! But one that is very perceptive.
